Contract filler Shield Packaging recently completed a major renovation project in support of safety and sustainability. The company, in the midst of its 70th anniversary, installed new gas house ventilation and safety systems at its manufacturing site in Dudley, MA.

To help ensure the required air exchange for both of Shield’s gassing rooms, the makeup air and exhaust system necessitated the installation of more than 700′ of new duct pipe, some up to 30″ in diameter. Two control panels for each of the two rooms and their systems were custom designed by Mike Martin Inc., a contractor specializing in the fields of LP gas and aerosol systems. The panels integrate the control of makeup and exhaust air, the 13 new Sensor Electronics infrared gas detection sensors and Shield’s IEP/Fenwall systems, along with new visual and audible alarms and the interlocks to both propellant supply lines and Shield’s production lines.

Shield operates from a 200,000 sq ft building and currently operates six aerosol filling lines and two lines for specialized liquid filling. The company stated they will continue to work on projects to refine and strengthen its abilities and is looking forward to the future.
