More than 42% of Canadian adults identify frequent and thorough hand washing as the No. 1 priority instruction for children when they return to school, according to a survey by Dial Canada in late May. The second highest priority for instruction is social distancing, according to 25% of respondents.

Some 12% believe that instructing children not to share personal items, including food and snacks, is the third most popular priority. Coming in fourth is wearing a mask. Other top ranking priorities include cleaning and sanitizing backpacks and contents when arriving home from school (7%) and limiting after-school activities (3%).

Nearly half of survey responded are “somewhat concerned,” and another 38.1% are “very concerned,” about their kids’ lapsed hand washing habits from the summertime/quarantine when they return to school.

“Our survey clearly indicates that Canadian parents believe that frequent and thorough hand washing should be a key priority for Canadian children returning to school,” said Maya Atallah, Senior Brand Manager, Dial, Henkel Canada Corp.

The survey of 1,000 Canadians was conducted by bms – marketing research + strategy.
